Choosing the Right E-Type Circlip
1) What is an E-type circlip & when to use it?

An E-type circlip (E-clip) is a three-prong, E-shaped spring steel fastener that snaps into a groove on a shaft and provides a shoulder on one side of the shaft.

Use an E-type circlip when you need a quick, economical axial retainer that can be installed from one side only:

To retain washers, spacers, collars, and light gears on a shaft

To locate bushes or small bearings on pins and shafts

In assemblies where fast installation/removal is more important than high load capacity

E-clips are widely used in:

Automotive linkages and small mechanisms

Appliances and light machinery

Electro-mechanical assemblies, valves, and controls

They are especially useful where you cannot access the end of the shaft and must clip from the side.

2) Shaft diameter & standard

E-type circlips are specified by the shaft diameter they fit on:

For example: “E-type Circlip for Ø6 mm shaft” is designed to fit a 6 mm shaft with the correct groove.

Selection steps:

Confirm the shaft diameter (e.g. Ø3, Ø4, Ø6, Ø8 mm, etc.)

Choose the matching E-clip size recommended for that shaft diameter.

Using the wrong size can cause:

Too loose → E-clip may fall off or have poor retention

Too tight → Over-stressing during assembly, risk of cracking or permanent deformation

3) Groove design – fit & function

Even with E-clips, the groove on the shaft is critical:

Groove position and width must match the E-clip design

Groove depth must allow enough clip engagement to give a positive axial stop

Key points:

The groove should be clean, burr-free, and properly aligned

The E-clip legs must sit fully in the groove, with the center “bridge” providing the retaining shoulder

For reliable retention, follow the groove recommendations given in the clip catalogue/standard

Because E-clips are usually for light to medium duty, many designs rely on standard machine grooves specified by the OEM or manufacturer.

Mechanical Properties (Guide) – E-Type Circlips

E-clips, like other circlips, are spring elements.
Their performance depends on spring properties (elasticity, fatigue, hardness), not on simple tensile strength alone.Stainless Steel E-Clips

Material: stainless spring steel (specific grade depends on manufacturer, often a martensitic or austenitic spring stainless)

Characteristics:

Higher corrosion resistance than carbon steel E-clips

Suitable for humid, marine, food, and chemical environments

Spring properties adjusted so that the clip still snaps securely into the shaft groove

Performance notes:

Ideal for smaller stainless assemblies where rust is not acceptable

Used together with stainless shafts & components to maintain consistent corrosion performance

Frequently Asked Questions

An E-type circlip (E-clip) is a three-prong, E-shaped spring steel fastener that snaps into a groove on a shaft from the side.
It creates a shoulder on the shaft to stop components like washers, gears, or spacers from sliding off.

E-type circlip (E-clip):

Clips onto the side of the shaft.

Needs only one-side access (you don’t need a free shaft end).

Has three legs and a central “bridge”.

External circlip (DIN 471):

Fits around the end of the shaft and into a circumferential groove.

Requires access to the shaft end for installation.

Provides a more continuous shoulder and generally higher axial capacity.

E-clips are usually used for lighter-duty, quick-assembly applications.

E-clips are specified by the shaft diameter they are designed for.
Example:

“E-Type Circlip for Ø6 mm shaft” is made for a 6 mm shaft with the correct groove.

Steps:

Confirm the shaft diameter (e.g. Ø3, Ø4, Ø6, Ø8, Ø10…).

Select the E-clip size that the manufacturer lists as matching that shaft diameter.

Never “force fit” another size – it can either fall off (too big) or crack/deform (too small).

Yes.
An E-clip must sit in a properly machined groove on the shaft:

The groove locates the clip axially.

The three legs of the clip must seat fully in the groove.

Without a groove (or with a poorly made groove), the E-clip cannot retain components safely.

E-clips are generally for light to moderate axial loads.
They are not intended to replace:

Heavy-duty external circlips in major rotating machinery

Nuts, shoulders, or flanges in structural or high-thrust applications

For high axial loads, use full circlips (DIN 471/472) or engineered bolted/shoulder solutions.
